What is special about ceramic?

What is special about ceramic?:

Ceramic materials are brittle, hard, strong in compression, and weak in shearing and tension. They withstand chemical erosion that occurs in other materials subjected to acidic or caustic environments. Ceramics generally can withstand very high temperatures, ranging from 1,000 C to 1,600 C (1,800 F to 3,000 F).

Glass vs Ceramics

Glass and ceramics are widely used for making household utensils. Apart from making household materials, glass and ceramics have found their place in many areas.

Glass can be called as a type of ceramic. Glass is known to be a non-crystalline material. It is an amorphous solid, which means that it has no long -range order of positioning of its molecules.

Ceramic can be termed as an inorganic material. Unlike glass, ceramics may have crystalline or partly crystalline structures. Ceramics may also be amorphous.

Ceramics are hard, brittle, oxidation resistant, wear-resistant, thermal and electrical insulating, refractory, nonmagnetic, chemically stable and prone to thermal shock.

Glass is hard, amorphous, inert, biologically inactive, fragile and transparent.

 Ceramics vs Plastic

Plastic, BPA free plastic and melamine (yes, it is plastic) dishes have shown to leach chemicals into hot foods and drinks. The warmth of the food softens the plastic allowing it to mix more easily with what you're eating.  Don?t take our word for it.  Check out this article from Time, or do a quick search yourself on ?plastic leaching chemicals into food?.

Research clearly shows that more studies need to be done on the effects of plastics on our bodies.  But why risk it when you can avoid it?  Stop putting plastics in the microwave (including plastic wrap) and serve food - especially hot foods - in glass, ceramic, metal, or wooden dishes.

Plastic is cheaper, lighter.  More for flower pot
